Earning Merit Badges
The following steps should be followed to earn a merit badge:
Discuss with the Scoutmaster your desire to purse the merit badge of your choice, obtain a signed “blue card” which is the official BSA Merit Badge application.
Contact the Merit Badge Coordinator, meritbadges@bsa212.org, to obtain the name and contact information of a registered Merit Badge Counselor for your merit badge.
With a buddy meet with the approved merit badge counselor. Give them your blue card. Do not begin working on the merit badge until you have met with your merit badge counselor to discuss the requirements.
A Scout must have a buddy with him at each meeting with a merit badge counselor. A scout’s buddy can be another scout, a parent or guardian, a brother or sister, or a relative or friend. Never meet with a Merit Badge Counselor one on one.
When the counselor has determined that you have finished or partially finished the merit badge, they will return your blue card to you. If the merit badge has been completed, you should then turn in your blue card to Dr. Butch Everson, the advancement chairman, in order to receive the merit badge at the next Court of Honor. If the merit badge was partially completed, the counselor will have indicated on the blue card which requirements have been completed. This serves as your official record. When you are ready to begin work again on the merit badge, present the blue card to your counselor to pick up where you left off.
The Troop recommends that you keep the card you receive with your merit badge as future proof of the merit badges you have completed. Some scouts like to put those cards in their Eagle Scout notebook.
Dr. Everson can be contacted at advancement@bsa212.org. Merit Badge Counselors contacting Dr. Everson should email him at the above address and put “Merit Badge Completed” in the Subject line.
