Troop History 1999-2008
Geographically speaking, here is where we have been!
Troop 212 was chartered in December of 1998 by the Knights of Columbus.

1999
- February 1999 Umstead State Park
This was the first campout for the younger scouts and the first outing for Troop 212. A demo of properly packed and equipped backpacks was portrayed for the first year Scouts. We took a short hike Saturday afternoon and over the campfire the Scouts talked about what they wanted to do and where they wanted to go as a Troop on future trips.
- March 1999 Uwharrie National Forest (with Troop 216)
The scouts worked on advancements and an ax yard was set up. Many Scouts earned their Tote'm Chits that day. This was one of the coldest hikes Troop 212 has been on. We woke up on Sunday morning to a freezing rain that turned the camp into a mud pit.
- April 1999 Dan Beard District Camporee, Camp Durant.
The theme for the Camporee was "The Quest for Knighthood". We participated in many field activities such as building a walking plank bridge, scaling a castle wall, compass games, stretcher races, fire building races, and others. We also participated in a competition to see who could make the most effective catapult out of materials we gathered at the site. On Saturday night there was a bon fire and an Order of the Arrow Tap Out ceremony.
- May 1999 Lake Waccamaw State Park (with Troop 216)
The Park Rangers showed us part of their job, they were cutting a new hiking trail around part of the lake. We did a service project helping the rangers clean the new trail. We removed many bags of litter from the trail area and the lakeshore.
- June 1999 Kinston-New Bern-Beaufort-Croatan National Forest
We saw the Confederate ironclad CSS Neuse in Kinston. In New Bern we visited Tryon Palace, the home of the Colonial British governors of North Carolina. We camped two nights in the Croatan National Forest. On Saturday we visited the NC Aquarium in Sandy Pines and the Maritime Museum in Morehead City.
- July 1999 Summer Camp at Camp Durant
This was our first Summer Camp as a Troop. 19 out of 23 Scouts attended the week of July 4th. Most Scouts completed the Trailblazer program for first year Scouts. Older Scouts worked on Rifle, Climbing, Environmental Science, Communications, Shotgun, Canoeing, and other Merit Badges.
- August 1999 Pancake Breakfast at Ritter Park
We held a Court of Honor at the end of the month and all the Merit Badges from Summer Camp were awarded along with rank advancements.
- September 1999 Big Sweep at Lake Jordan
Cancelled due to Hurricane Floyd
- October 1999 Troop Junior Leader Training at Optimist Farm Park in Garner
MB, DB, CP, AW, and AZ learned leadership skills and how to work together.Big Sweep at Falls Lake
We stayed Friday night at BW Wells. Saturday morning we did a cleanup along one trail and along part of the shoreline of Falls Lake. The water was really high because of the recent hurricane. Saturday afternoon the Park Rangers "asked" us to leave because of an approaching hurricane. The weather was not cooperating with us in the fall.
- November 1999 Thanksgiving at Camp Durant
We roasted turkeys over charcoal and Scouts had their pick of working on Rifle, Shotgun, or Climbing Merit Badges.
- December 1999 Luminaria Fund Raising
We bagged and distributed luminaria kits to certain neighborhoods for Christmas.
2000
- January 2000 Falls Lake
The Scouts working on Hiking Merit Badge completed a 10 mile hike while the younger Scouts worked on knots, lashings, and other Scout skills.
